Makahuena #1-308 [1]
Poi pu Beach
Reviewed on 2025-02-19 by Gayle M. , West Bend, WI USThe property was clean and very well organized. Great views of the ocean. The outside lighting could be better especially for those arriving after dark. It was very hard to find our building while wondering around in the dark. There could also be a better numbering system on the building with better visibility from the parking lots.
Wonderful unit
Reviewed on 2025-01-28 by Catherine C. , REDMOND, WA United StatesWe just got home from the Makahuena. The property management company was very responsive and helpful. They emailed tips about cool things on the island. I've been to Kauai at least 15 times, and I've never stayed at the Makahuena. This is a great location, walkable to poipu and brennecke's beach. We could spot whales from our balcony. The place was very clean, including the bathrooms that looked recently remodeled. It's not fancy but was very comfortable and pleasant to hang out inside. We didn't miss AC at all. We closed the shades during the day to block the sun before we left for beaches and then opened screened windows and doors in the evening for cool air. If anything, we were cold at night inside the unit. If you were going to hang out indoors during the day, it might be too hot. That said, WHY would you be indoors during the day in Kauai!!! It was super nice to have a washer and dryer in the unit. The pool and hot tub were very well maintained. The hot tub shut down at 9pm (wish it would've been 10pm). There was someone there each day cleaning the pool and hot tub - they were super clean. The only potential downside about this place would be if you couldn't do stairs or carry your luggage upstairs (there is no elevator). This was no problem for us, but I can see how this might be an issue for someone with mobility issues or bad knees - or potentially a young family with toddlers. There were also 2 flights of stairs inside the unit. Anyway, ignore the negative reviews about this place - it was completely perfect for what we wanted and exceeded our expectations. I'll absolutely book this unit again in the future!
Better than advertised
Reviewed on 2024-02-13 by David W. , Bozeman, MT United StatesMy adult daughters and son-in-law and I stayed in this unit between January 26th and February 4th. We found it better than the listing indicated, especially the view of the ocean from the lanai. It was clean and conveniently located close to many beaches, restaurants, a dive company, and whale-watching and Napali tours. The staff was very responsive in helping resolve a minor issue with the internet access and a more major incident involving a door to the lanai, which came off its track. My only issue was that I scraped the skin off my heel, while descending steps from the loft. Watch out for this because it could mess up water activities. They could fix the problem by making the loft stairs like the stairs between first and second floors. The problem is that the vertical board separating the steps does not go down to the next step. If you happen to step too close to the step above, you can scrape your heal on this.
Close to great activities
Reviewed on 2024-01-20 by , KNOXVILLE, TN USFamily of 6 thoroughly enjoyed our time on the South Shore. The rental was well equiped. Nice layout of bedrooms/bathrooms. Only comment is that the place needed a little better cleaning. The balcony in particular needed a fair amount of cleanup before we could use the table and chairs.
Worst condo and customer service
Reviewed on 2023-07-23 by Jenny N. , Irvine, NA UnknownAnts got into our groceries the first day which was blamed on us (our fourth condo in Kauai and our first time having this problem). When we used the oven for the first time and opened it the smoke caused the detector to go off - we were blamed again because we put in bacon but the issue began before cooking it. Took a picture of the carbon buildup and was told the oven is cleaned every time - was advised to leave key in decrepit lockbox I practically had to break nails to get in despite the knob having a key code the housekeeper had. Then we realized two of the three toilets weren't screwed down tight enough so one leaked at the seal. We were advised the unsafe balcony would be repaired during our stay but it wasn't. The high nightly rate led me to expect good customer service (there's a reason it was still available for eleven nights straight just a few weeks before our vacation) but was sorely disappointed. Cannot recommend this specific unit (Makahuena which we stayed at last year is not to be missed) or company. They even tried accusing us of leaving a mess to discredit my negative Airbnb review but if that was true I'm sure they would've charged extra as was stipulated in their checkout procedures.
There are much better places to stay on Kauai
Reviewed on 2022-03-28 by , Knoxville, TN United StatesThis condo is located above a unit that is occupied by heavy smokers and barking dogs. Oceanfront Realty provides only one key for the unit, which is kept in an ancient rusted out lock box. The lock box is so hard to open we would not use it during our stay. When asked to provide a spare key we were told that the policy is only one key, that way their guests won't lose it. The loft screens were out of the windows, laying on the roof out of reach from the condo. When we asked Oceanfront to retrieve them and reinstall, they ignored the request. We were not pleased with this condo or Oceanfront and will not stay with either again.
Should not be rented until updated
Reviewed on 2021-10-18 by Jack M. , San Francisco, CA USIt's a dump - does anyone from your company ever visit the property. The furniture is literally falling apart. 5 light bulbs burnt out including stairway light on top floor – very dangerous at night. Dishwasher is broken. Refrigerator had mold on the water dispenser – which did not work. Shower door in first bedroom is broken. Front screen on the window blows in the wind due to being cut loose on two sides. I could go on and on! Very disappointing.
Our Stay at Makahuena #1-308
Reviewed on 2020-04-05 by , United StatesThe property was generally in poor condition. One of the stove elements was not working. Another one was tilted at an angle making it dangerous for cooking. The microwave had to be replaced because of an electrical burning smell. However the replacement was a tabletop microwave that took up limited counter space. The furniture was uncomfortable. The top floor shower door was broken. The tv instructions had not been updated. Lanai door was stiff and needed lubricant.
